Add & Format Text on a Moodle Page (with Links & Video)

This guide shows how to create a Page in Moodle, format headings and text for accessibility, add lists and links, and embed a video (Kaltura/YouTube).

1) Create a Page resource

  1. Open your course and toggle Edit mode on (top-right).
  2. In the section where you want the content, click Add an activity or resource.
  3. Select Resources → choose Page → click Add.

2) Add the basic details

  1. Enter a clear Page name (this appears on the course homepage).
  2. In Description, add a short synopsis of what’s on the page.
  3. Tick Display description on course page if you want that synopsis to show under the link.

3) Add your main content

  1. In Page content, paste or type your text.
  2. Apply proper headings for structure and accessibility:
    • Place your cursor on a heading line.
    • Use the Paragraph/Heading dropdown (the “A” menu) to choose Heading (Large / Medium / Small).
    • Tip: Use headings instead of just increasing font size or using bold—this improves accessibility and navigation.

4) Optional text formatting & callouts

  • Text color: Select text → click the Text color (paintbrush) icon to apply color (use sparingly for contrast).
  • Highlight: Select text → click the Highlight (lightbulb/marker) to draw attention to key lines.
  • Bold/Italic: Select text → click B/I or use Ctrl/Cmd+B/I.
  • Lists: Select your items → choose Bulleted or Numbered list. Add a blank line between a section title and the list for clarity.
  • Quotes: Type the quote, select it, then use Indent and Italic (and a consistent heading size if it’s a pull-quote).
  • Alignment: Left/center/right align as needed; keep most body text left-aligned for readability.
  • Indent/Outdent: Use the indent arrows to nest callouts or emphasize notes.
  • Editor workspace: Click the four-arrows icon to expand the editor, and drag the bottom-right corner to resize the typing area.

5) Add links

  1. Select the text to become a link (e.g., “Final Cut Pro”).
  2. Click the Link (chain) icon.
  3. Paste the URL, choose Open in new window, and confirm.

6) (Optional) Embed a video with Kaltura

  1. Place your cursor where the video should appear.
  2. Click Embed Kaltura Media (name may vary: “Embed Kaltura video/Kaltura Media”).
  3. Choose an existing recording from your list, or click Add NewYouTube.
  4. Paste the YouTube URL → click Preview (note: only public videos are supported).
  5. Click Save and Embed. You’ll see a placeholder in the editor; the playable video appears after saving the page.

7) Save & review

  1. Click Save and display to view the page.
  2. Confirm headings, highlights, lists, links, and video render correctly.

8) Edit later (title or content)

  • Rename from the course page: Turn on Edit mode, click the page title, edit (e.g., add “(2024)”), press Enter to save.
  • Edit the page content: Open the page → click Settings, or from the course page click the page’s three dotsSettings.

9) (Advanced) View HTML source

  • Click the </> / code or expand/hook icon to toggle HTML view if you need to fine-tune markup or embed custom code. Only use this if you’re comfortable with HTML.

Accessibility tips

  • Use proper Headings (not just bigger text) to structure content.
  • Keep sufficient color contrast; avoid using color alone to convey meaning.
  • Use descriptive link text (e.g., “Final Cut Pro user guide”) rather than “click here”.
  • Prefer lists for steps or features; they’re easier to scan and read.
