How to backup your Moodle course files

This article covers how to create a backup of your Moodle course files (PDFs, PowerPoints, Word Documents etc) and also how to backup a copy of your course that can be used to import your course to Moodle at a later point.

Backup your course files

  1. Login to Moodle and go to your course page.
  2. Click on the gear icon above the Turn editing on button.
  3. Select Download Instructor Files.
  4. A copy of your course files (PDFs, Images, PowerPoints, Word Documents) will be copied to your downloads folder.
  5. Copy this to your Okanagan College OneDrive folder to keep a secure copy of your course content files.

Backup a working copy of your Moodle course

This backup is a *.mbz file that can be re-uploaded as a full working copy of your course using the restore option.

  1. Login to Moodle and go to your course page.
  2. Click on the gear icon above the Turn editing on button.
  3. Select Backup.
  4. Scroll down and click Jump to final step.
  5. The backup will run and you will click continue to view your list of previous backups.
  6. Click the Download button for the course you backed up.
  7. The *.mbz file will save to your downloads folder.
  8. Copy this to your Okanagan College OneDrive folder to keep a secure copy of your course content files.

Backup video from MyMedia

If you have video stored in the MyMedia folder then each video must be download individually to keep a backup.

  1. Go to your course Media Gallery or MyMedia folder.
  2. Select the video you wish to download.
  3. Go to the Actions > Edit option below the video.
  4. Click on the Downloads tab below the video.
  5. Check Available Formats: Source.
  6. Click Save
  7. Click Go To Media.
  8. Click Download and then the download icon under the Actions column.
  9. The video will save in your downloads folder.
  10. Move a copy of your video to your Okanagan College OneDrive folder to keep a secure copy.
