Zoom

Zoom

Zoom is an online conferencing platform that is frequently utilized as an interactive Virtual Classroom with features including video conferencing, digital whiteboards, breakout rooms, guest lectures and polling. Zoom and Kaltura are similar and competing products that are normally chosen based on individual instructor preference. Zoom is usually used for online or hybrid classes and is accessed from a link found in your Moodle course page.

Zoom is also utilized internally for as an alternative to Teams meetings for departmental business meetings.

Zoom's features

  • Video Conferencing for class presentation and discussion
  • Digital Whiteboards
  • Breakout rooms for sub-groups
  • In class polls
  • Chat functions
  • Screen Sharing
  • Cloud recording of lecture for later review

Instructors may not utilize every feature.

Instructors seeking support for Zoom integration should reach out to Learning and Applied Research for best practices, workshops, one-on-one consultations and technical support.

Zoom Account

Participants do NOT require accounts to attend a Zoom based meeting or course, however the meeting host requires a Okanagan College created Zoom account in order to host meetings longer than the public account limits of a free Zoom account - currently limited to ~40 minutes.

Staff and Faculty may request an OC Zoom account to host longer meetings by submitting a request here

Notes:

  • Zoom is generally only used for online or hybrid courses
  • Access is normally a link found in your Moodle class
  • Some instructors prefer to use a product called Kaltura which has similar features and many consider to have greater Moodle integration; check Moodle or your course outline to see which is used for your specific course. If you have multiple online courses you may need to be familiar with both.
