Missing Bootstrap and Accordions in Moodle 4.5? Plus How to Move Quizzes Between Courses

Start here if something looks wrong

The video above shows how to switch your text editor to Atto. In Moodle 4.5, most issues with missing buttons, unavailable HTML options, or broken accordions are resolved by switching editors before editing content.

Why the Atto Editor Matters in Moodle 4.5

Moodle 4.5 introduces a cleaner, more streamlined editing experience—but that also means the tools you see depend heavily on which text editor you’re using. If you need access to Bootstrap components, accordions, or HTML/source view, the Atto editor is essential.

Many instructors run into issues in Moodle 4.5 where expected editor buttons are missing, toolbars look different from a colleague’s, or advanced options such as accordions can’t be edited or inserted. In almost every case, this isn’t a course problem—it’s an editor preference issue.

Moodle supports multiple text editors, but not all of them expose the same tools. The Atto HTML editor is the editor that provides:

  • Access to HTML / Source view
  • Support for Bootstrap-based components
  • The ability to add and edit accordions
  • A consistent toolbar across pages, labels, and Text and media areas

If you’re using a different editor, you may still see content on the page, but you won’t be able to properly edit it. This is why switching to Atto is the first step in fixing a wide range of Moodle editing issues.

Fixing missing or uneditable accordions

Accordion problems are one of the most common symptoms of using the wrong editor. In Moodle 4.5, if you can’t expand an accordion while editing, can’t insert a new one, or don’t see accordion tools at all, your editor is almost certainly not set to Atto.

Switching your editor preference to Atto HTML editor restores those tools and allows accordion sections to be opened, edited, and added as expected. The video at the top of this page walks through that process step by step.

Quick troubleshooting

  • The toolbar looks different than my colleague’s: You’re likely using a different editor. Watch the video above and switch to Atto, then refresh the page and reopen the editor.
  • HTML or Bootstrap formatting breaks: Make sure you’re pasting and editing content in the HTML/Source view, not the visual editor.
  • Accordion or HTML options are missing entirely: Confirm your editor is set to Atto. If the options still don’t appear, your course may restrict HTML editing.

Another common question this week: How do I move a quiz or exam to a new course shell?

If you’re setting up a new Moodle course and need to reuse a quiz or exam from a previous shell, the easiest and safest approach is to use Moodle’s Course reuse tool. This method copies only what you select and avoids overwriting existing course content.

The short video below walks through the process step by step.
