Moodle Tutorial: Importing a Quiz Using the Course Reuse Button

You can easily bring a quiz from a previous course into a new course shell using Moodle’s Course reuse tool. This method is ideal for copying quizzes without overwriting your current course content.

✅ Step-by-Step Guide

1. Go to Your New Course Shell

  • Log into Moodle and navigate to the course where you want to import the quiz into.

2. Access the Reuse Tool

  • On the course homepage, click “More” in the top navigation menu.
  • Select “Course reuse” from the dropdown options.

3. Choose Import

  • At the top of the reuse page, ensure the action selected is "Import".

4. Select the Source Course

  • You’ll see a list of courses you have access to. If the course isn’t immediately visible, use the search box to find it (e.g., type ID101).
  • Select the course that contains the quiz you want to import.
  • Click “Continue”.

5. Initial Settings — What to Include

  • You’ll now see several checkboxes:
    • Ensure “Include activities and resources” is checked.
    • Check “Include question bank” to bring over all related quiz questions.
    • Other options like blocks, filters, and calendar events can be left checked or unchecked depending on your needs.
  • Important: Including the question bank ensures your quiz works properly, especially if it pulls from question categories.
  • Click “Next” (don’t use "Jump to final step").

6. Choose What to Import

  • Moodle will display sections from the source course.
  • Click “Select none” to clear all selections.
  • Scroll and check only the section that contains your quiz (e.g., "Quiz 1").
  • Click “Next”.

7. Select the Specific Quiz

  • You’ll now see a list of activities in the chosen section.
  • Check only the quiz you want to import.
  • Click “Next”.

8. Review and Confirm

  • On the summary screen, double-check that only your intended quiz is listed.
  • Click “Perform import” to begin.

9. Complete the Process

  • Wait for the import to complete.
  • Click “Continue” when prompted.

The quiz will now appear in your new course shell. Note that the quiz will be placed in the same section number as in the original course. For example, if it was in Topic 2 in the old course, it will appear in Topic 2 in the new course—even if that section has a different name.

💡 Tips

  • If needed, turn editing on and drag the quiz to a different section.
  • After importing, double-check quiz open/close dates and settings.
  • Be sure to preview the quiz to confirm everything copied correctly.
