Add Audio to a Quiz

Learn how to embed audio into a quiz for listening comprehension, sound identification or scenario-based questions.

This tutorial demonstrates recording audio directly in a Brightspace quiz question. The example uses a Short Answer question and asks students to type the word they hear. You can use the same audio insertion process with other question formats.

Step 1: Create your quiz question

  1. With your quiz open for editing, select Create New > New Question.
  2. Select Short Answer.
  3. Enter your question instructions in the question text field. For example: Listen to the audio and type the word you hear.

Step 2: Record your audio

  1. Place your cursor where you want the audio to appear in the question text.
  2. Select Insert Stuff in the editor toolbar.
  3. Select Add Video Notes.
  4. Choose Audio Only.
  5. Select New Recording, then start recording.
  6. Speak the word or message you want students to hear, then stop recording. In the example, the word scrimmaging is spoken twice.

Step 3: Insert and test the recording

  1. Select Next.
  2. Give the recording a title, then select Next again.
  3. If a message says the file is currently being processed, select Insert to add it to the question.
  4. Once the audio is ready, play it in the question editor to check that the recording is clear.

Step 4: Enter the expected answer

  1. Scroll down to the answer settings.
  2. Enter the answer students should type. For this example, enter scrimmaging.
  3. Review the answer-matching options, including case sensitivity and regular expressions. Add alternative accepted answers if needed.
  4. Select Save.

Step 5: Preview the quiz

  1. Open the quiz Preview and start the quiz.
  2. Play the embedded audio.
  3. Type an answer in the field below the recording to check the question experience.

Check Your Work

  • The audio appears within the question and plays correctly.
  • The instructions clearly explain what students need to do.
  • The expected answer and any accepted alternatives are entered.
  • You have tested the question in the quiz preview.
