How to Add, Manage and Hide Sections in Moodle

This guide walks you through organizing your Moodle course using sections—helping students navigate easily and letting you control visibility while developing content.

✅ Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Open Your Course in Moodle
Navigate to the course you want to edit.

  2. Review Course Layout
Scroll down the main page to view all the existing sections.
You can also use the left-hand navigation panel to jump between sections quickly.

  3. Collapse or Expand Sections

    • Use the collapse/expand icons beside each section to hide or show content.

    • Use the “Collapse all” button at the top to close all sections for a clearer overview.

  4. Enter Edit Mode
Click “Turn editing on” at the top right of your course page.

  5. Manage Individual Sections

    • Click the three dots (⋮) beside any section title to open options.

    • From here, you can choose to rename, hide, duplicate, or delete sections.

  6. Add a New Section

    • Scroll to the bottom of the course page.

    • Click “+ Add topic” (or similar, depending on your theme).

    • A new blank section will appear that you can edit and move as needed.

  7. Hide Sections During Development

    • Use the section settings to temporarily hide content from students while you're still editing.

    • This helps keep your course clean and avoids confusion before sections are ready.

  8. Reorder Sections

    • Drag and drop sections using the move icon (four-way arrow) when editing is on.

    • Organize topics logically for smoother student progression.
