ReadSpeaker for Accessibility in Moodle

A quick and easy way to increase accessibility in your Moodle course is to add the Readspeaker text-to-speech block to your home page and configure it to show up on all pages.  The user can then adjust the reading speed setting to improve comprehension by decreasing the speed for understanding or increasing the speed to match their reading pace.

Other features include highlighting text, ability to adjust font, size and color of text, paging masking to shade rest of text to reduce distraction, translation feature, a dictionary, and the ability to save audio of speech-enabled text as MP3 files for download.

To add the Readspeaker block to your course

  • turn editing on > at the bottom of the left panel
  • select Add a block
  • select Readspeaker webReader from the list

  • click on the gear and select Configure Listen to this page

  • toggle open Where this block appears > and Display on page types choose Any page.
