Lumi is an AI assistant built into Brightspace that helps educators create and revise course content more efficiently. It can support common teaching tasks such as building quiz questions, drafting discussion prompts, generating assignment ideas, creating units from files, and writing unit summaries.

Lumi works best as a starting point that educators can review and customize for their learners.

1. Create Quiz Questions

Quickly generate formative or summative quiz questions from existing course materials.

  1. Go to Course Admin.
  2. Select Quizzes.
  3. Open Question Library.
  4. Select Generate Questions.

2. Create Discussion Prompts

Generate discussion questions that encourage reflection, participation, and critical thinking.

  1. Go to Course Tools.
  2. Select Discussions.
  3. Select New.
  4. Select New Topic.
  5. Select Generate Discussion Ideas.

3. Create Assignment Ideas

Generate assignment topics, activities, or project ideas aligned with course outcomes.

  1. Select the relevant Unit.
  2. Select Create New.
  3. Select Assignment.
  4. Select Generate Assignment Ideas.

4. Generate a Unit from a File

Upload course materials and generate a structured learning unit with topics and activities.

  1. Select the relevant Unit.
  2. Select Create New.
  3. Select Generate Unit from File.

5. Create Unit Summaries

Generate concise summaries to help learners understand the purpose and key concepts of a unit.

  1. Select the relevant Unit.
  2. Click the three dots menu.
  3. Select Edit.
  4. Select Generate Summary.

  • Review before publishing: Read through AI-generated content to ensure it is accurate, clear, and aligned with your course outcomes.
  • Adjust tone and wording: Edit content so it matches your teaching style and the needs of your learners.
  • Check for accessibility: Make sure instructions, questions, and summaries use clear language and accessible formatting.
  • Verify examples and references: Take a quick look through AI-generated examples and references to ensure they fit your course context and learning goals.
  • Use Lumi as a starting point: Lumi can help spark ideas and speed up course development, while educators add the context, expertise, and personalization that make learning meaningful.
