Step 1: Create a New Brightspace Page

Start in the Brightspace unit where you want to add the new page.

  1. Open the unit where the page will be added.
  2. Select Create New.
  3. Select New Page.

Step 2: Select the Content Page Template

Use the template selector to apply a pre-built page layout.

  1. In the top-right corner, select Select a Template.
  2. Review the available template designs.
  3. Choose Content Page.
  4. Select Save and Close to preview the starting layout.

Step 3: Review the Template Layout

The template includes a banner image area, structured content sections, and an icon callout area near the bottom of the page.

  • Use the banner area to visually introduce the topic.
  • Use the main content area for instructions, learning materials, or activity information.
  • Use the icon callout area for a tip, reminder, example, or key takeaway.

Step 4: Edit the Page and Replace the Banner Image

Return to edit mode to replace the default banner image with an image that fits your page topic.

  1. Select the three dots menu just to the right of Create New.
  2. Select Edit.
  3. Click the small banner image placeholder in the editor.
  4. Select the Insert Image button in the top editor toolbar (not the mini editor pop up).
  5. Choose My Computer and click Upload to select an image from your computer.
  6. Select Add.
  7. Add meaningful Alternative Text for the image.
  8. Select OK.

After saving, the template will display the image as a full banner even if it appears small while editing.

Step 5: Add the Page Title and Body Content

Paste your title and body text into the template areas.

  1. Copy the title for your page.
  2. Paste the title into the title area of the template.
  3. Paste your body text into the main content area.
  4. Review the spacing and layout after pasting.

Step 6: Format Headings Consistently

Use heading styles to keep the page clean, consistent, and easier to navigate.

  1. Click each section heading in the content area.
  2. Apply Heading 2 for major sections.
  3. Delete or adjust any duplicate placeholder headings left from the template.

Consistent headings also support accessibility because they help screen reader users understand the page structure.

Step 7: Update the Bottom Callout

Use the bottom callout area to add a helpful note, example, or pro tip.

  1. Click in the bottom callout area.
  2. Replace the placeholder text with your own tip or key information.
  3. Keep the note short so it works as a quick reminder for learners.

Step 8: Change the Callout Icon

The template icons are stored with the course files and can be changed without rebuilding the layout.

  1. Click the existing callout icon.
  2. Select Insert Image.
  3. Choose images from the Course Offering Files
  4. Open the folder called 'img'. This is where the SVG icons are stored for the template.
  5. Choose an icon, such as a pencil or question mark icon by checking the check box for that file.
  6. Select Add.
  7. Mark the icon as decorative if it does not add meaning beyond the visible text.
  8. Select OK.

Step 9: Save and Review the Finished Page

Save the page and check that the template displays correctly for learners.

  1. Select Save and Close.
  2. Review the banner image, headings, body text, and callout.
  3. Confirm the page looks clean and consistent.

Step 10: Update the Navigation Title

Before finishing, make sure the title shown in the Brightspace unit navigation matches the page title.

  1. Return to edit mode if needed.
  2. Update the page title field at the top of the page.
  3. Select Save and Close.

Pro Tip

Templates work best when you edit the existing structure rather than deleting large sections and rebuilding from scratch.

Replace images, headings, icons, and text while preserving the layout. This keeps pages consistent across your Brightspace course and makes the learning experience easier to follow.
