Efficient Grading in Moodle: Enter Grades and Feedback on One Page

Enter Moodle assignment grades on one page (Single view)

This guide shows you how to use Single view in the Moodle gradebook to enter grades and feedback for a single assignment on one page — especially helpful when you’ve graded offline in a document or spreadsheet.

When to use this method

  • You have already graded student work offline (e.g., Word, Google Doc, spreadsheet).
  • You want to copy and paste grades and feedback for all students from one screen.
  • You prefer not to open each assignment submission individually in the grading interface.

Before you start

  • Make sure the Moodle course and assignment already exist.
  • Have your offline marks and feedback document open (and sorted in the same order as your Moodle gradebook, if possible).
  • Be aware that using override in Single view will mark grades as overridden in the grader report (they’ll appear highlighted).

Step-by-step: Enter grades for one assignment on a single page

  1. Open the assignment in your course
    1. Go to your Moodle course.
    2. Click the assignment you want to grade (e.g., Rugby analysis essay).
    3. You can grade here if you wish, but for bulk entry we’ll use the gradebook instead.
  2. Open the gradebook and go to Single view
    1. From the course, open the Grades area.
    2. In the gradebook, locate the dropdown near the top left (often showing Grader report).
    3. Change this dropdown from Grader report to Single view.
  3. Select your assignment in Single view
    1. At the top of Single view, make sure you are viewing Grade items (not User).
    2. Use the dropdown to choose the specific assignment you wish to grade.
  4. Turn editing on
    1. Click the Turn editing on button within Single view.
    2. You may notice that the grade fields appear greyed out — Moodle assumes you are grading from within the assignment activity itself.
  5. Use “Override all” to unlock all grade fields
    1. Find the Actions dropdown in the Single view page for that assignment.
    2. Select Override all.
    3. This opens the grade and feedback fields for every student on this page.
Note: Overridden grades show as highlighted (often yellow) in the main Grader report.
  6. Arrange your windows for easy copy and paste
    1. Position your offline grading document on one side of your screen.
    2. Keep Moodle Single view on the other side.
    3. Confirm student order matches as closely as possible.
  7. Copy and paste grades and feedback for each student
    1. For each student:
      • Double-click the grade → copy → paste into Moodle.
      • Triple-click feedback text → copy → paste into Moodle.
    2. Continue through the entire list.
Speed tip: Use Tab to move between grade and feedback fields quickly.
  8. Save regularly as you go
    1. Scroll to the bottom and click Save periodically.
    2. New grades will appear in the Grader report, highlighted to show they’re overridden.
Good practice: Save every 10–15 students for large classes to avoid timeouts.
  9. Return later to continue grading (if needed)
    1. Open Grades → Single view.
    2. Select your assignment again.
    3. Turn editing on → choose Override all again.
    4. Resume entering grades.
  10. Confirm your grades in the Grader report
    1. Switch back to the Grader report.
    2. Check that:
      • All grades are present.
      • Overridden grades are highlighted.
      • Feedback displays correctly (depending on settings).
