Creating Question Pools in Brightspace Quizzes

Creating Question Pools in Quizzes

Question pools allow you to randomly select questions from a larger set, so each student receives a slightly different version of a quiz while the assessment remains consistent.

  • Create randomized quizzes from a larger question bank
  • Improve quiz variation across students
  • Reuse and organize questions more efficiently

This short video demonstrates how to create a question pool and pull a set number of quiz questions from a larger question library.

What is a Question Pool?

A question pool draws a set number of questions from a larger collection stored in your course question library.

For example, you might:

  • Store 50 or more questions in your question library
  • Display 10 randomly selected questions for each student attempt

This helps provide variety while keeping the quiz structure and point values consistent.

Before You Begin

  • Make sure your questions are already created in the Question Library
  • Consider organizing questions into sections by topic, unit, or semester
  • Confirm you have enough questions in the pool to support meaningful randomization

How to Create a Question Pool

  1. Open your course and go to the quiz you want to edit.
  2. Choose Create New and select Question Pool.
  3. Enter a name for the pool.
  4. Set the number of questions to display, such as 10.
  5. Assign the point value for each question.
  6. Browse to the Question Library.
  7. Select either individual questions or an entire section from the library.
  8. Click Import to add the selected question set.
  9. Review the pool settings.
  10. Save the question pool, then Save and Close the quiz.

Organizing Your Question Library

The Question Library can include multiple sections, which makes it easier to manage larger banks of questions.

  • Create sections for different topics or modules
  • Use naming conventions that are easy to identify later
  • Store reusable questions for future quizzes and courses

Previewing the Pool

After creating the question pool, use the preview or refresh option to see how different quiz versions may appear.

  • Confirm the correct number of questions appears
  • Check that the point values are correct
  • Review the balance and variety of questions students may receive

Why Use Question Pools?

  • Provides each student with a different version of the quiz
  • Supports academic integrity through randomization
  • Makes it easier to reuse well-developed question banks
  • Helps scale assessment design for larger classes

Recommended Approach

  • Build a larger question bank than the number of questions shown in the quiz
  • Keep questions in a pool at a similar level of difficulty
  • Preview the quiz several times before release
  • Review question wording regularly to keep your pool current and clear
