Whether you are an instructor preparing asynchronous content or a student submitting a video presentation, this guide walks you through recording with Kaltura Capture in Moodle, along with additional tools available on both Windows and Mac.


Option 1: Kaltura Capture (Recommended for OC Moodle)

Kaltura Capture is the best option when you want your video to appear directly inside Moodle.
Recordings upload automatically to My Media, include auto-captioning, and embed easily in course pages.

Who can use this?

  • Faculty creating lectures, assignment walk-throughs, demonstrations, and course tours.
  • Students recording presentations or screen-based assignments.

Step 1 – Install Kaltura Capture

  1. Log in to Moodle.
  2. Select My Media from the top navigation.
  3. Click Add New → Kaltura Capture.
  4. Download the installer for Windows or Mac.
  5. Run the installer and follow the prompts.

If you're using a college-managed computer, you may need help from IT Services to complete installation.

Step 2 – Launch Kaltura Capture

  1. Return to My Media in Moodle.
  2. Select Add New → Kaltura Capture again.
  3. Allow the browser to open the Kaltura Capture desktop app.

Step 3 – Set Up Your Recording

  • Screen – Choose which monitor or display to capture.
  • Camera – Enable webcam video if desired.
  • Audio – Select your microphone and check input levels.

Step 4 – Record

  1. Click Record and wait for the countdown.
  2. Navigate your slideshow, Moodle course, or any content you want to demonstrate.
  3. Click Stop when finished and confirm.

Step 5 – Upload to Moodle

  1. Preview your recording in the Kaltura Capture window.
  2. Name the recording and add an optional description.
  3. Select Save & Upload.
Kaltura will automatically generate closed captions once processing is complete.

Step 6 – Embed the Video in Moodle

Option A – As a standalone activity

  1. Turn editing on in your course.
  2. Select Add an activity or resource.
  3. Choose Kaltura Video Resource (or similarly named tool).
  4. Click Add Media → choose your recording → Embed.

Option B – Embedded inside a text block

  1. Add a Text and media area resource.
  2. Click the Embed Kaltura Media icon.
  3. Select your recording → Embed.
  4. Save and view your embedded player on the course page.
