Fix accordion editing in Moodle by switching to the Atto editor

If you can’t open, edit, or add collapsible accordions while editing content in Moodle, the issue is often caused by your current text editor setting. This guide shows how to switch your editor preference to Atto HTML editor, which restores the accordion tools and makes accordion sections editable again.

When to use this fix

  • You can see accordion content on the page, but you can’t expand the accordion while editing.
  • The option to insert an accordion (sometimes shown as a “components” or “tool” menu) isn’t available in the editor.
  • You’re editing in a Text and media area (or anywhere the Moodle editor appears), and accordion controls aren’t working.

Before you start

  • You’ll need access to your Moodle user preferences.
  • This change affects the editor you use across Moodle (not just one course).
  • If you share a course with other instructors, each person must update their own editor preference.

Step-by-step: Switch your editor to Atto

  1. Open your user preferences
    1. Select your profile menu (your name or profile icon) in the top navigation.
    2. Choose Preferences.
  2. Find Editor preferences
    1. Look for a section labelled User account (or similar).
    2. Select Editor preferences.
  3. Change the text editor to Atto HTML editor
    1. Locate the setting for your text editor.
    2. Select Atto HTML editor from the list.
  4. Save your changes
    1. Select Save changes.
  5. Return to your course and try editing the accordion again
    1. Go back to the page where the accordion is located.
    2. Open the activity or area you were editing (for example, a Text and media area).
    3. Confirm you can now expand accordion sections and access the accordion insert options in the editor.

Troubleshooting

  • I switched editors but nothing changed: Refresh the page and re-open the editor. If needed, sign out and sign back in.
  • I still can’t edit the accordion text: Try selecting the accordion title or content area directly in the editor, or switch to HTML view (if available).
  • I don’t see the accordion insert option: Some accordion tools appear under a components or menu icon in the editor toolbar.
