Enter grades for one activity using Single view in Moodle
This guide explains how to use Single view in the Moodle gradebook to enter or adjust grades for one grade item on a single page. This method is most useful for manual grade items or situations where grades need to be entered directly into the gradebook.
When this method makes sense
- You are entering grades for a manual grade item.
- You need to make quick adjustments to grades already recorded.
- You want to view and edit grades for one activity without opening individual student submissions.
For most Moodle assignments, grading directly within the assignment activity remains the recommended approach.
Before you start
- Ensure the course and relevant grade item already exist.
- Confirm that the grade item is appropriate for direct entry in the gradebook.
- Be aware that using override will flag grades as overridden in the Grader report.
Step-by-step: Enter grades using Single view
- Open the Grades area
- Go to your Moodle course.
- Select Grades from the course navigation.
- Switch to Single view
- In the gradebook, locate the report selector near the top of the page.
- Change it from Grader report to Single view.
- Select the grade item
- Ensure Grade items is selected (not User).
- Choose the activity or manual grade item you want to work with.
- Enable editing for the grade item
- Use the Actions menu for the grade item.
- Select Override all to allow direct editing.
Note: Overridden grades are visually flagged in the Grader report.
- Enter grades and feedback
- Enter grades directly into the fields for each student.
- Add feedback where appropriate.
- Work steadily through the list, saving periodically.
- Save your changes
- Scroll to the bottom of the page.
- Select Save to apply your changes.
Good practice: Save regularly when working with larger class lists.
- Review in the Grader report
- Return to the Grader report.
- Confirm grades and feedback display as expected.
